عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ مَسْعُودٍ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ وَهُوَ الصَّادِقُ الْمَصْدُوقُ: «إِنَّ أَحَدَكُمْ يُجْمَعُ خَلْقُهُ فِي بَطْنِ أُمِّهِ أَرْبَعِينَ يَوْمًا نُطْفَةً، ثُمَّ يَكُونُ عَلَقَةً مِثْلَ ذَلِكَ، ثُمَّ يَكُونُ مُضْغَةً مِثْلَ ذَلِكَ، ثُمَّ يُرْسَلُ إِلَيْهِ الْمَلَكُ فَيَنْفُخُ فِيهِ الرُّوحَ، وَيُؤْمَرُ بِأَرْبَعِ كَلِمَاتٍ: بِكَتْبِ رِزْقِهِ، وَأَجَلِهِ، وَعَمَلِهِ، وَشَقِيٍّ أَوْ سَعِيدٍ. فَوَاللهِ الَّذِي لَا إِلَهَ غَيْرُهُ إِنَّ أَحَدَكُمْ لَيَعْمَلُ بِعَمَلِ أَهْلِ الْجَنَّةِ حَتَّى مَا يَكُونُ بَيْنَهُ وَبَيْنَهَا إِلَّا ذِرَاعٌ فَيَسْبِقُ عَلَيْهِ الْكِتَابُ فَيَعْمَلُ بِعَمَلِ أَهْلِ النَّارِ فَيَدْخُلُهَا، وَإِنَّ أَحَدَكُمْ لَيَعْمَلُ بِعَمَلِ أَهْلِ النَّارِ حَتَّى مَا يَكُونُ بَيْنَهُ وَبَيْنَهَا إِلَّا ذِرَاعٌ فَيَسْبِقُ عَلَيْهِ الْكِتَابُ فَيَعْمَلُ بِعَمَلِ أَهْلِ الْجَنَّةِ فَيَدْخُلُهَا».

English Translation

On the authority of Abu ʻAbd al-Rahman ʻAbdullah ibn Masʻud (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ, the truthful and trustworthy, narrated to us: “Verily the creation of each one of you is gathered in his mother’s womb for forty days as a drop, then he becomes a clinging clot for a like period, then a lump of flesh for a like period, then the angel is sent to him and breathes the soul into him, and he is commanded with four matters: to write down his provision, his lifespan, his deeds, and whether he will be wretched or happy. By Allah, besides whom there is no other god, one of you may do the deeds of the people of Paradise until there is but an arm’s length between him and it, and then what has been written overtakes him so that he does the deeds of the people of the Fire and enters it; and one of you may do the deeds of the people of the Fire until there is but an arm’s length between him and it, and then what has been written overtakes him so that he does the deeds of the people of Paradise and enters it.”

Waxaa laga weriyay Abu ʻAbdir-Raxmaan ʻAbdullah ibn Masʻuud (Allaha raalli ka noqdo), inuu yidhi: Rasuulka ﷺ, kii runlowga ahaa ee la rumaysan jiray, wuxuu noo sheegay: “Midkiin abuurkiisa waxaa lagu soo ururiyaa uurka hooyadiis afartan maalmood isagoo dhibic (nutfo) ah, kadibna wuxuu noqdaa ʻalaqo (xinjir dhiig ah) muddo la mid ah, kadibna wuxuu noqdaa goo hilib ah muddo la mid ah, kadibna waxaa loo soo diraa malag oo ruuxa ku afuufa, waxaana lagu amraa afar arrimood: in la qoro rizqigiisa, ajashiisa (cimrigiisa), camalkiisa, iyo inuu noqonayo mid xun (shaqi) ama mid wanaagsan (saʻiid). Wallaahi, kan aanan Ilaah kale jirin isaga mooyee, midkiin wuxuu samayn karaa camalka ehlu-jannada ilaa aysan u dhexayn isaga iyo jannada in ka yar dhudhun, markaas baa qorniinku ka hor maraa oo uu sameeyaa camalka ehlu-naarka oo uu gala; midkiinna wuxuu samayn karaa camalka ehlu-naarka ilaa aysan u dhexayn isaga iyo naarta in ka yar dhudhun, markaas baa qorniinku ka hor maraa oo uu sameeyaa camalka ehlu-jannada oo uu gala.”
