Tajweed Made Simple
Tajweed means reciting each letter correctly, from its proper place, with its rights. Here are a few foundational ideas to begin with.
Short Vowels (Harakat)
Fatḥa (a), Kasra (i) and Ḑamma (u) are the small marks that give each letter its vowel sound.
Madd (Elongation)
Certain letters stretch the sound. Learning where to lengthen keeps your recitation balanced and clear.
Ghunnah (Nasal Sound)
A gentle nasal sound held on certain Nūn and Mīm letters, usually for about two counts.
Qalqalah (Echo)
Five letters (ق ط ب ج د) carry a light “bouncing” echo when they have a sukoon.
Makharij (Points of Sound)
Every letter has a place in the mouth or throat it comes from. Correct points = correct letters.
Waqf (Stopping)
Knowing where to pause and where to continue protects the meaning of the verses.

Tips & Etiquette for Learners
Begin with sincerity
Start with the intention of pleasing Allah, and say “Aʿūdhu billāh” and “Bismillāh” before reciting.
A little, consistently
Ten focused minutes every day will take you further than long, rare sessions. Stay consistent.
Listen, then imitate
Play a verse, listen closely to the reciter, then repeat it aloud until it feels natural.
Repeat to memorize
Use the “Repeat verse” option to loop a single verse until it settles in your heart.
Respect the Muṣḥaf
Be in a state of cleanliness, sit respectfully, and give the Qurʼan your full attention.
Find a teacher
Self-study is a great start, but a qualified teacher will correct your pronunciation and guide you.
