عَنِ النَّوَّاسِ بْنِ سَمْعَانَ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ قَالَ: «الْبِرُّ حُسْنُ الْخُلُقِ، وَالْإِثْمُ مَا حَاكَ فِي نَفْسِكَ وَكَرِهْتَ أَنْ يَطَّلِعَ عَلَيْهِ النَّاسُ». وَعَنْ وَابِصَةَ بْنِ مَعْبَدٍ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ: أَتَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ فَقَالَ: «جِئْتَ تَسْأَلُ عَنِ الْبِرِّ؟» قُلْتُ: نَعَمْ. قَالَ: «اسْتَفْتِ قَلْبَكَ، الْبِرُّ مَا اطْمَأَنَّتْ إِلَيْهِ النَّفْسُ وَاطْمَأَنَّ إِلَيْهِ الْقَلْبُ، وَالْإِثْمُ مَا حَاكَ فِي النَّفْسِ وَتَرَدَّدَ فِي الصَّدْرِ، وَإِنْ أَفْتَاكَ النَّاسُ وَأَفْتَوْكَ».

English Translation

On the authority of al-Nawwas ibn Samʻan (may Allah be pleased with him), from the Prophet ﷺ, who said: “Righteousness is good character, and sin is that which wavers in your soul and which you would dislike people to discover.” And on the authority of Wabisah ibn Maʻbad (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: I came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and he said: “Have you come to ask about righteousness?” I said: “Yes.” He said: “Consult your heart. Righteousness is that with which the soul is at ease and the heart is tranquil, and sin is that which wavers in the soul and causes unease in the breast, even if people give you their opinion and approve of it.”

Waxaa laga weriyay al-Nawwaas ibn Samʻaan (Allaha raalli ka noqdo), oo ka wariya Nabiga ﷺ, inuu yidhi: “Birru (wanaagga) waa akhlaaq wanaagsan, dembiguna waa wixii nafta kugu mushkilo (kugu welwela) oo aad neceb tahay in dadku ogaadaan.” Waxaana laga weriyay Waabisah ibn Maʻbad (Allaha raalli ka noqdo), inuu yidhi: Waxaan u imid Rasuulka ﷺ, wuxuuna yidhi: “Ma waxaad u timid inaad wax ka weydiiso birrigga (wanaagga)?” Waxaan idhi: “Haa.” Wuxuu yidhi: “Weydii qalbigaaga. Birru waa wixii ay nafta ku xasilato oo qalbiguna ku degganaado, dembiguna waa wixii nafta kugu mushkila oo laabta kugu wareega, in kasta oo dadku ay fatwo ku siiyaan.”
